The first requirement of learning, and the center of photography, all meet at one word…Focus. In my time working to learn and understand photography as well as learning and teaching in general. I have come to realize that focus is key to success. Without it three questions at minimum are created. What’s the point? Who knows what’s going on? and Why don’t I want to keep looking at this photo?

Using the environment around you to enhance your images is one of the core aspects of photography. What do you think helped me in this photo?

Teaching and substitute teaching in today’s society, really emphasized some key points. 1 education is not about what you learn, it’s about learning how to learn. Teaching is about creating an environment that allows learning to take place. In a previous post I talked about continuing to try, despite outcomes, this post I can share that paying attention and being present in the moment. Each photo has something worth seeing. It’s our job as photographers, to choose what it is and communicate that to the viewer.

I have learned questions are as important as answers. If you don’t ask questions about your own images, it’s more likely that your image will be vague. Here are three questions you should be asking about your photos that will help you focus.

  1. Who is this picture for?

  2. What do I like about this slice of time?

  3. What story am I telling?

  4. How will they know what I want them to see?

There are more things to consider, but these three help clarify why you are taking the photo, and with enough practice asking these questions while shooting you will see your own style start to develop. And find more slices of time that you are proud of in your portfolio.

If you are ready to go down the rabbit hole of photography, but don’t know where to start, I offer an online course titled, “How Does This Thing Work? It will help you learn the basics of understanding your location, lighting, and your camera. Don’t be frustrated by not knowing why your kids faces are blurry, or the whole scene looks orange, or blue, or nothing is in focus. Pick up your camera with confidence, grab that slice of time and add it to your other memory treasures. Click the link below to find out more about this course.

P.S. We want to hear your feedback and questions about this blog post. It helps me so much to know what you think. Of course Respect is the environment we are maintaining on this site, so let respect inform your comments and questions to me as well as your responses to each other.

P.P.S. What did the taxi driver say to the wolf?
